Personality & Traits

General Overview Kyrruk’s Vulcan side is visible in his personality in the way he loves structure and order, following rules and plans, preferring routine to out of the ordinary or on the fly decisions. On the other hand, he can be too rigid and a little judgemental of others. He prefers working with others and will go to great lengths to make sure others do not look bad or are comfortable and happy.
Strengths & Weaknesses Kyrruk is fiercely loyal with a strong sense of duty. What that means for him in Starfleet is, it would be impossible for him to betray a senior officer or Starfleet as a whole. It would be against his personal moral code. He has strong practical skills, good at timekeeping, keeping schedules, and routines. He can get along with near anyone and typically connects well with other people. However, he can be inflexible and too needy, requiring a strong support network and a good group of other people around him. Changes in routine can be difficult for him. At times he may be too selfish, neglecting himself in favor of the needs of those around him.
Ambitions Kyrruk has never been overly concerned with rank, though he does not particularly avoid promotions. Mostly, he wants to explore, meet people, and learn. He values new experiences and generally, despite his dislike of change, is open to trying something new, so long as that doesn’t derail his usual routine. He is happy with his work, he likes what he does.
Hobbies & Interests Kyrruk is highly into reading and writing and his favorite genres are fantasy and realistic or historical fiction. One of his favorite things to do is build his own worlds, using his expertise and knowledge to add realism to his projects. He also likes practicing survivalism, what to do if one were stranded in a remote location, and things involving heights, like flying, skydiving, or paragliding.

History

Personal History Family History
The Bergerons
Originating in Earth’s France region, the Bergeron family moved to Samerilia in 2322 when Kyrruk’s great-grandparents boarded a colony bound ship and arrived there, wanting to work for the scientific university. They made a life for themselves there, settling into Melitene. Kyrruk’s great grandmother, Valerie Lablanc, was an environmental scientist and his great grandfather, Jean Bergeron, was a biologist. They worked for the Melitene University of Science until their retirement in their eighties.

They had four kids, the third youngest of which was Zachary Bergeron, Kyrruk’s grandfather. He was an environmental scientist, like his mother, and that was how he met his future wife, Riley Rivera, who was a zoologist and expert in animal rehabilitation and habitats. She consulted with city development to avoid or minimize the displacement of natural wildlife in the area and harm to the environment. They had two kids together, Adrian and Claire.

Claire choice and entirely different career path to her parents. She was not any sort of scientist at all. Instead, she was an artist and photographer. And that was why it was so surprising when she married a Vulcan.

The Vulcan side of the Family
Pipim’s ancestors were some of the founders of the Samerilian colony. In the early days of the colony world, after the founding of Melitene, Pipim’s ancestors chose to remain in Melitene and adapt to a newer way of life when a group of Vulcans chose to leave the city and found their own city more reminiscent of the way of life on their home planet. Because Vulcans live so long, and Samerilia is only a two hundred year old colony planet, the founders of Samerilia are Pipim’s grandparents.

Claire and Pipim’s Family
The marriage between Pipim and Claire was only surprising to the people who knew Claire until they met him. Vulcans still had a reputation for being uptight, mostly logical, and inflexible. Pipim was not these things. Like many of the Vulcans in Melitene, Pipim’s family did not follow the teachings of Surak and used meditation only to keep their emotions in check, not to maintain full control and neutrality. It was with this philosophy that he raised his own kids.

Childhood
Kyrruk was born on the colony world of Samerilia, to a Vulcan father, Pipim, and Human mother, Claire Bergeron. He had two older siblings, Sauralk (8 years older), and Allison (4 years older). Because of their age gap, Kyrruk and Sauralk weren’t close.

Kyrruk was closer with Allison. When they were young, they would play together and when Kyrruk started school, Ally would help him with his homework. Allison always wanted to follow in their mother’s footsteps. When she was young, she’d collect dirt and plants to ‘study’. Sometimes she would ask Kyrruk to help her.

He got into the Earth originated sport of rugby, but never joined a junior league. In school, he loved studying and his favorite subject was social studies, because he liked learning about all the different people in the galaxy, past and present. There were several different cultures and environments, most with their own language. He was decent at science, too, but had little interest in hard sciences like chemistry or physics.

His father, and architect for the city of Melitene, was always around but usually busy. His mother, an environmental scientist for the university, sometimes had to go away for weeks or months to study some Samerilian wilderness somewhere. The family was used to it.

Teen years
When Kyrruk was ten, Sauralk surprised everyone by declaring he had been accepted to Starfleet Academy. He was leaving at the end of the “Summer” (Samerilian seasons didn ot match up with Earth seasons.) HIs parents were proud but also sad he would be leaving. Kyrruk had never considered Starfleet as a career path.

Sauralk sent letters home regularly. He said Earth was an interesting place. That Academy was nice. Kyrruk loved his stories. In his own schooling, Kyrruk had fine grades, but had yet to decide what to do. He had friends in school who said they wanted to join Starfleet, so they could see space, their species' ancestral home planet, or meet people. Others said they would never ever board a spaceship if they could help it. Too many awful ways to die.

Kyrruk said something like that happening was worth the exploration. He talked about his brother’s letters and how cool it all sounded. His best friend at the time agreed with him. He and his whole group of friends talked about what to do in Starfleet, they knew there were lots of careers. Sauralk of course, was a doctor. But there were all sorts of branches of medicine, or nursing or medics, also all the branches of science, engineering, and security.

By the time Kyrruik was fourteen, his brother had graduated Academy and was sent out on a ship. After that, his letters were less frequent but still came. It was time for Kyrruk to choose his own career path, so he could start working towards it. He decided to do the same as his brother and join Starfleet.

Ally, his older sister, went to college on Samerilia when she graduated, studying environmental science like she always wanted to. She was finishing her undergraduate degree when Kyrruk graduated school.

The rest of school went too quickly. He grew apart with some of his friends as their classes took different routes. Starfleet Academy was selective and Kyrruk and only one of his friends got in. That summer, like his older brother, Kyrruk left for Academy.

Starfleet Academy and First assignment
Life at the academy on Earth was an adjustment. It took time for Kyrruk to find his place on campus. The Vulcans were traditional and he did not fit with them because he did not follow the teaching of Surak. He found his place and made friends a couple months into the first semester. He chose the Science path, and after a short time in Biological Sciencces, he switched to Linguistics based on the suggestion of an instructor. It was a much better fit.

The rest of Academy went smoothly for him with no major incidents. When first assignments came out, he was nervous. He was assigned to an exploration ship called the USS Horizon. He worked under another linguist on that ship who taught him several tricks they didn’t teach in Academy, to help translations, tricks for when the UT wasn’t working right, things like that. Kyrruk did well, learning and improving quickly.

The Vulcan Ship
Three years later he was reassigned to a Vulcan ship that needed a linguist. It was quickly obvious how poor of a fit Kyrruk was with the crew. Distrust and discontent grew between himself and the crew, almost entirely Vulcans from the homeworld. Kyrruk spent most of his time in his quarters. After a few months, another Vulcan linguist was assigned to work under him the same way he had worked under someone else on the Horizon. It did not take long before the crew seemed to prefer going to her, than Kyrruk.

Kyrruk did not request a transfer because he wanted to make it work (he didn’t want to ‘fail’) and the Vulcans didn’t request one because there was nothing wrong with his work so there was no logical reason to.

The ship received a mission to visit a late 1800’s to early 1900’s era planet to assess the civilization development and progress. The planet, like old Earth, had separate countries on all its inhabitable continents. The landing party headed to a landlocked country located mostly in a desert region of the planet.

Upon landing, the landing party learned the country and its southwestern neighbor were at war, a squabble over the planet’s natural resources. The Universal Translator was malfunctioning, leaving translating up to Kyrruk and the ship’s secondary translator, both present on the landing party.

Because they did not speak the same language as the inhabitants they were captured by the country’s government as “spies” from the country to the north of this one. They were asked to tell what they knew, to give away the secrets of their “home country”. The Vulcans did not understand very well the concept of nations greedily fighting over resources.

In the end, they convinced these people to let them do something for them, and the Vulcans took the offer, knowing they could just beam back to the ship. If they didn’t do the mission, they would all be thrown in prison for espionage. The catch was at least one party member had to be left behind, to ensure the entire landing party did not just flee. Since there were two linguists, Kyrruk was chosen to be left behind. After three days passed, and the Vulcans had not returned, he was arrested for espionage and sentenced to life in prison, never to be released. There were not very many regulations in this country about lengths and fairness of prison sentences.

Eight months passed before they returned for Kyrruk, having secured a sufficiently Prime Directive-friendly way to barter for his release. Their negotiations were successful, and Kyrruk was released to them, and able to return to the ship.

On the ship, the treatment of him did not change, so he finally requested his transfer.
