History
Personal History | Benjamin was born February 24, 2366, on Starbase 12. Both his parents were Starfleet officers, and both came from a long line of Starfleet officers going back four generations. Like his older brothers, Ben was raised on various starships, moving from ship to ship with his parents’ assignments. Unlike his brothers he was more quiet and less confident than either of them. While growing up he participated in various sports tournaments and teams among leagues between starships, designed for children of Starfleet officers. Ben proved to be an excellent athlete but tended to hold back his abilities as he was uncomfortable when there was attention on him. This led to many sacrifices he made for himself, such as not pursuing tennis or solo sports that he genuinely enjoyed for more solitary hobbies such as reading and building models or tinkering with computer components as a boy. Benjamin knew from an early age that he was expected to carry on the family legacy of being a Starfleet officer, like his brothers and his parents, and theirs before them. His parents always took great pride in their duty and the family tradition. Feeling compelled not to disappoint his parents, Ben obliged their request and applied to Starfleet Academy. Despite his brother Josh graduating not long after he arrived, Ben felt he couldn’t escape his family’s legacy and was frequently compared to his brothers while there. During his second year at the academy, Benjamin volunteered to assist the victims of the attack on Utopia Planitia shipyards. The lieutenant commander assigned to oversee Ben’s recovery team noticed the teenager remained calm under pressure and was a comfort to the survivors. The lieutenant commander made a commendation in Benjamin’s file for his efforts and sent word to his advisor to encourage Ben to pursue a career in medicine. While he felt uncomfortable being noticed, he couldn’t help but agree that it felt like the right decision. Unlike his brothers, Ben found he didn’t want the spotlight but could make a difference in people’s lives without receiving medals. It was only when Ben decided to rebel slightly against his family’s expectations and go into medicine and was accepted into Starfleet Medical that he felt he was able find himself. With his family all serving as bridge officers, they were somewhat dismissive of his choice to be a doctor but begrudgingly accepted it, even if his brothers occasionally tease him for not being a hero and saving the ships he would eventually serve on. Finding a space where he was not known as just another Woods, Benjamin began to come out of his shell somewhat and found a small group of friends where he would be able to enjoy going out and socializing while at the Academy. He explored options and found he enjoyed playing the piano and taught himself how to play. He would play frequently with his group of friends, but especially alone, finding it soothing. It was at the end of his sophomore year at Starfleet Medical that Benjamin found his first real relationship with Lia Meyers, a fellow cadet at Starfleet Medical. During his time at Starfleet Medical he briefly considered being a counselor but decided that he enjoyed the challenge that came with being a medical officer. His ability to stay cool under pressure and to think quickly led him to focus his studies on general medicine and specialize in emergency medicine to put his skills to the best use. The night of his graduation he was heartbroken to find out that Lia was ending their relationship. She was assigned to a ship scheduled for a deep space exploration assignment and not returning to Federation space for nearly four years and she felt it was best they do not wait for each other. She reminded him this was the life of a Starfleet officer and expected he would understand, given his own upbringing. This breakup led Benjamin to suffer from a deep depression that overshadowed his first assignment, a junior medical officer aboard the USS Spokane. While competent in the position, Ben’s depression prevented him from truly enjoying the experience. After two years aboard the USS Spokane, he requested a transfer to the USS Montgomery, in hopes a change in ship would help shake him out of his rut. While it did help with the depression, and he found enjoyment in his work as the assistant chief medical officer fulfilling, he couldn’t shake the reputation of his family where many of his crewmates either served with or knew either his brothers or his parents. After three years, Benjamin rebelled from his family’s expectations again and applied for the newly freed up post of chief medical officer aboard Poseidon Station, where no one would likely know him. |
