A Lucky Penny

1,097 words; about a 5 minute read

Open personal log, Cara Letsul," the dark haired half betazed speaking to her computer, She was a bit bemused about how her day had gone.

"Today was an interestingly odd day, but odd in a good way. I recall an old human saying, see a pin pick up, all the day you'll have good luck, see a pin let it lay, bad luck you'll have all day. I have heard of it for a penny as well. And today, it all started with a penny. Before I commence my tale, a quick briefing of my state of mind. I was feeling a bit low when I woke up this morning, reflections of the Breen attack of the station and feeling the pain, the sadness, the confusion, the anger as to what happened. Some of the anger was mine, towards Raphael. At first it was due to the meeting we had with the other diplomats seeing if they were going to stay or go. Just something he had said, or maybe I misunderstood what he said, as I felt he was calling into question my ability to deal with the Breen. Don't know why it bothered me, perhaps, maybe it reflected an momentary inner doubt of my own. To make matters worse, I found out that he had sent someone to the Founders to get help. Without checking with me, then again he may have figured out I'd probably raise stink, and he would have been right."

"Another human saying that comes to mind, would be "It is easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission." And I think that Raphael has that etched into the very fiber of his being. Tapping into that when he needs it the most. I do digress though, but one more comment concerning that subject, sometime perhaps he and I will talk about what happened. And blast it he was right in doing what he did. I worry though, about the possible ramifications. Now back to my other event."

"Today I was particularly missing my brother, just seeing that Vorta as well as the Jem'hadar ships had brought forth rather strong feelings, They had worked with the Founders closely, and that just brought up my anger, my hatred for the ones who caused the death of my brother, Elias. Seeing that Vorta, I thought I had come to terms with that. Guess I haven't yet.
Now back to the subject I had started with, a penny and not just a mere penny, a very rare penny. "

"This morning I was really wanting something to eat, and not made by my hands. I got a strong craving for some of the soup they make at the Big Easy Bistro, a nice sized bowl of their Jambalaya, and it is something I like to eat as one of my comfort foods. Also one other thing is, It reminds me of when Elias and I had made a stop in New Orleans just for a visit, and we ate Jambalaya and it was so good! And that time in New Orleans my brother and I taking in the sights it was lovely."

"On the way to the restaurant to see Lisette and Aphonse, something caught my eye, it was shiny, the color of highly polished silver. I was curious, and I went to investigate. To my surprise, I found a penny, the date stamped upon it was 1944 a steel wheat penny! I could scarcely believe that I found one. My brother Elias had one a long while ago and it had disappeared along with the rest of the coin collection. He wasn't happy to find that it had been stolen this was because it had been given to him by Grandfather. We never found any sort of leads or anything of that nature. It was unsolved mystery. I was so happy to find it, though I do still need to get it authenticated to see if it is the real deal. I am hoping so, this way maybe, even if Elias is not here physically, at least I would have the feeling of regaining that which had been stolen".

"I arrived at the Bistro, being greeted by both Lisette and Alphonse . It did my heart good to see their pleasant faces and catch the scent of what they have been cooking up. It was amazing and the soup gave me warmth and comfort. Then came dessert, triple berry pie with a scoop of ice cream, and the pie nice and warm. My mouth is watering once more. Good thing I brought home a full pie and I already have ice cream in the freezer."

"While I was eating that delicious pie ala mode, who walks in was that shy man who had left me that note a little while back. I had kept on forgetting to contact him. However as luck would have it, there he was getting ready to hand Lisette an envelope. Lisette looked over and smiled at me and I knew it, he was hoping that I would receive another message from him. Lisette who was rather animated in her talk with him, had him turn around then she motioned for him to go to my table. He was rather bashful and shook his head, the tips of his ears turning pink. Lisette took matters in her hands, she went to his side linked her arm with his and brought him over to my table."

"He was persuaded to have a piece of pie on the house, he wanted to have the same type of pie i was eating. And pie ala mode. His ice cream was a berry crunch. Something different but it looked very good. I will have to try that next time i get pie ala mode. We chatted, and he told me a comical story. All in all it was lovely having someone to eat pie with. And the best thing of all, I now have a date. He actually asked me out I was afraid he was going to pass out. Oh and before i forget, the man's name is Captain Andre' LaBeau. His ship is the SS LChaney. And I won't have to worry about the date being interrupted, unlike before when I started dating someone. We'll be meeting in front of the Bistro tomorrow. Since I really don't know him, I would rather meet Andre' at the Bistro. Well a piece of pie is calling my name. Tomorrow we'll meet for lunch, and possibly a walk in the arboretum- Cara Letsul signing out for now. "
