A Proposal

2,419 words; about a 12 minute read

Mission: Mini Mission: When The Cat's Away
Location: Brig
Timeline: January 2nd, 2397

Eugene had been silently looking into Lt Hiro Yoshido for awhile now. His talents and skills were useful, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to force the man.

He had heard he was in the brig and knew what better way to talk to him than to do so in such an isolated place. He slowly made his way to the brig his figure hardly noticed or acknowledged.

The way he liked it his white hair glimmered under the stations lights. He made it to the brig. “All of you leave until given fidget orders.” Eugene showed his credentials and the entire area was deserted. The only prisoner was sitting in his cell looking up at the ceiling.

Eugene stood there observing the man in silence hidden in the shadows.

You could almost hear a pin drop, and that was what Hiro noticed. He looked down and out of his cell. Where did the Security Officers go? He stood up and walked to the force field. "Hello? Is someone there?"

Eugene smiled in the darkness and moved forward just far enough where Hiro could see him. "No one just the imagination at work."

"That's a vague answer." The Asian Chief Ops Officer said. He tried to make out who the person was to whom he was talking to, but was unable to recognize him. "You look real enough to me. Who are you?"

Eugene stepped forward a bit farther fully revealing his face. " I don't think you have the luxury of asking me questions Lieutenant. You seem to be in some hot water Lieutenant. So the question is what happened?"

Everything about this felt wrong. Hiro let the man at the other end of the force field wait. He was in no hurry to tell him anything. He wasn't in the mood for it and, secondly, he still didn't know who the man was. "I don't see why I should tell you." he finally said. "Why are you here?" Perhaps he wasn't in a situation to ask questions, but he didn't care. Any information he could get was better than nothing.

Just then a voice was heard, "Just what are you doing here." as a blonde woman steps inside where Hiro is being held. "I got word of someone sending my people out of the brig." her eyes narrowed. "I am Assistant Chief of Security, Lieutenant Serra. What is your business here? And who are you." her arms crossed over her chest, "Also does Commander Letsul know of your presence here?"

Eugene had heard the faint footsteps and slinked back into the darkness before the person could see him.

Eugene shook his head and sighed "My business is with the prisoner and the prisoner alone, as to who I am. I am the Deputy Director of DTI in this sector." He narrowed his eyes and the next words that came out of his mouth were like a knife "No one knows of my presence here nor am I treated like a child where I must disclose my location. I will tell the appropriate people when it feels necessary."

"And that is where you are wrong. Just because you are with the DTI doesn't make you overlord of all that is here, there is still protocol and procedures that need to be followed. And the prisoner is here under Star Fleet law." Kaylee getting a firm look in her eyes. "I am also not treating you as a child." raising an eyebrow. "I mentioned Commander Letsul as she is in command. My position here is to maintain and secure the safety of those who live on the station. And if I deem someone is not going according to that, I have no qualms in dealing with them and it doesn't matter what rank or station or even a position they are in. If they are a danger to the safety of an individual or to the station on as a whole then... they are under the microscope."

Eugene stepped forward his hands open "I am a threat to no one and I am not going to hurt anyone. I am here to speak to the prisoner as his reason for being here is ridiculous." He handed the woman a PADD with the information he had. "I am here to offer the man a way off the station and away from the people that accused him. As you can see none of what I have done has broken laws or regulations." He stepped back into the light further "As to being in here I apologize if it upsets the procedures, but what I have to say, as you can see is not something just anyone can hear."

"Quite frankly, if you mess with due process, you will make it to where Hiro will not be found innocent. Instead if he disappears, it will look like he is guilty. I've been on this investigation from the start, and I do not need him to be found guilty even if he has been accused of the crimes against him. I 'know' that he didn't do what he is being charged with. Call me biased, I intend on him being found innocent. He is innocent, and I feel it. However just because I feel it, I sense it, that won't be enough to clear him. The cold hard facts need to be found and that is going to take time. No short cuts." Kaylee folded her arms over her chest, and then looked over towards Hiro. "Besides, that honorable man, he has a say so on what he wishes to have happen."

Eugene was quite aware of the situation, but he could not disclose the full information and it seemed the Chief did not care about the information on the PADD. So be it he wouldn't try to sway her. She was set in her ways as most Starfleet officers, there wasn't anyway he could help now. "Well I shall take my leave than if there is not way I can assist."

"As I had mentioned, Hiro has the decision, I am not going to speak for him. I'd say, you wait for moment and see what he has to say."

While Kaylee waited for Hiro to make a comment she sent off a message for a JAG Officer. She didn't know if one had been called for Hiro but it was needed.

Rachel received the message just as she finished reading the PADD for Lieutenant Yoshida's case. "A distinguished officer then this. I find it hard to believe." She said to her empty office. With a quick and decisive motion she acknowledged the call from Kaylee.

Moments later Rachel in her red command uniform, which bore her rank pips on one side of her collar and the JAG insignia on the other, walked into the Brig. She smiled at Kaylee. "Hey Lieutenant you rang? Sorry for not getting here sooner got a little backed up. I trust you didn't interrogate my client..." Rachel's tone at the end was a little joking and mocking.

"I haven't done so, and I prevented him from doing any questioning or talking to Lieutenant Yoshida. I do not know his name but he did say he was the Director of the DTI, and I do not know what his business is with Lieutenant Yoshida. And he did not specify a name at all." looking at Rachel then towards the DTI Director.

She did look at Hiro and ask, as what she deemed proper. "Are you okay? Lieutenant Yoshida?"

"That depends. This is not the best of all places." Hiro said as he kept a curious eye on the DTI director.

Rachel turned toward the other person present. She had no idea who the man was but if he was the DTI Director he deserved some modicum of respect. "Well, good day Director. What business do you have with my client?"

Eugene looked at the officer and replied “I do not have any business per se, but I want to help the Lieutenant seeing as we know he did nothing wrong.”

"That's what I've been telling everyone the whole time." The Chief Ops looked between the JAG officer and director of DTI before letting his eyes rest on Kaylee. "But it seems they only found evidence that says I'm guilty of a whole list of crimes."

Rachel was at a loss for a brief moment. She was unsure why the DTI would take interest in Yoshida and she was not about to trust them as of yet. "Well thank you for your offer of assistance. At the moment we are assessing the case but we may have need for a character witness. Should that need arise I hope we can rely on you to provide it. At the moment I must speak with my client and build his defense." She said to Eugene and then turned to Hiro. "That may be true, but evidence can be planted and even forged. We must look at each piece one at a time."

Eugene nodded before turning to leave the area "I will do what I can to help. If I am not needed I shall take my leave."

Before the Deputy Director had the chance to leave Hiro interupted. "I would like to know how the DTI department can help me, and why they're suddenly interested in me." He looked at Rachel. "I'm still allowed to talk to others, aren't I?"

"Yes of course Lieutenant you can speak to whomever you like. However, as we do not know who is framing you or why I would caution and warn against it. If you decide to talk I would insist on being present and should I end the conversation it would be over. The choice is yours of course." Rachel replied. She was only an Hiro's legal representative and as such only an advisor.

Eugene stopped and turned around with his hands clasped "How we help depends on what you want to do for the rest of your career. We can find you a position when you are found innocent that will not take into consideration this ridiculous crime you have been accused of. As to why we're interested let's just say you have incredible talents." he said looking at the lieutenant in the brig.

Kaylee just stood there and listened, an eyebrow raised. This was so strange to her, as to how things were going at this time. Somehow there has to be evidence that will prove Hiro's innocence.

Hiro raised his brows slightly. He didn't see himself as a miracle worker. Still, it was nice to hear word got around that he did his job well. "Thanks,..but I can't just walk out of here. I think that in the end that would get me into even more trouble."

Rachel cocked an eyebrow. Who the hell does this guy think he is. Attempting to circumvent the legal system. "The Lieutenant is right. Just walking out of here will forever seal his guilt in the minds of some. It is better to fight and clear the name entirely."

Eugene shook his head "No you misunderstand me...when the Lieutenant is proven innocent I want to help make his transition away from the station easier."

"You..want me to come work for the DTI?" Hiro said surprised. Maybe there was another explanation, but this strange conversation started to point to a job offer in some way. "There were a few mandatory courses on Temporal Mechanics at the Academy, but I can't say I'm well versed in it."

Kaylee blinked at this, "Okay so... you are offering him a job, and what if he is needed somewhere else? How would that work out?" this conversation about time stuff was just a bit confusing.

Eugene looked at Hiro "Lieutenant this choice is yours I will not sway you one way or another. I am offering you a position in the DTI. If you want to take a position elsewhere you can do so. The DTI does need remote workers as well. I will not push you towards a decision. Whatever you do I understand and will respect."

Both eyebrows raised as Kaylee stared at Eugene for a few long moments, then her attention went to Hiro, "Would you be wanting something like that to happen?" this was certainly turning into a rather strange conversation.

Rachel could not believe what she heard. This was absurd. "I believe the Lieutenant has bigger fish to fry as it were. Perhaps once the current situation is settled you can continue your recruitment." She knew that she had no reason to be as upset with the situation as she was, but she could not help it.

Catching the emotions emanating from Rachel, Kaylee took a look at her then back to Hiro then back to Eugene. "For now, I believe that this conversation needs to be at an end. Also, if you decide you wanted to speak to Lieutenant Yoshida again, you need to go through the proper channels, Mister Thompson. I know I haven't let Lieutenant Yoshida get in a word edgewise, but at this time he definitely needs to have a consultation with Commander Malbrooke."

Hiro still was a bit lost for words. He never thought the DTI would be interested in him. But he would be lying if he said he wasn't interested. Quite the contrary. He look at Thompson. "I appreciate the offer. Perhaps we can talk again later. That is, if I get out of here first."

Rchel smiled, "And that is where I come in. Now I think the first thing we should go over is where you were when the incidents occurred and if we can prove it." She tried to gain control of the meeting and steer it to the here and now.

"That sounds liked a good start. But where to begin? I don't know where my problems began." Hiro sat down on his bunk again. He felt like this could become a long conversation.

Kaylee looked at Hiro and also Rachel. "So Director, shall we take our leave?" looking at Eugene. "I'll leave it to you, Commander Malbrooke." she stated, turning to Rachel and Hiro. "Just let me know if you need anything."

Then Kaylee motioned towards Eugene, and stepped out.
